Study Boxes is a local-first macOS app for organising study setups, resources, tasks, reminders, and optional focus controls. This policy explains how Study Boxes handles personal data when you use the app, visit this website, contact support, buy a license, or enable optional diagnostics.
1. Controller
The data controller is Study Boxes. For privacy requests, contact support@studyboxes.app. If you need postal contact details for a formal privacy request, email us and we will provide the appropriate contact route.
2. Short version
- Your study boxes, tasks, notes, resources, session history, and local preferences are stored on your Mac.
- Study Boxes does not inspect, collect, or restore individual browser tabs.
- Accessibility permission is used only for features that affect other apps, such as focus modes, window restore, and optional desktop Spaces setup.
- Payments and license handling are provided by an external checkout and licensing provider.
- Crash reporting is optional and disabled unless you turn it on.
- We do not sell personal data.
3. Personal data we process
App data stored locally
Study Boxes stores your study boxes, resource names, file paths, website URLs, tasks, notes, session data, settings, and window-restore information locally on your Mac. This information is not uploaded to Study Boxes by default.
Website and server data
When you visit this website, the hosting and security providers may process standard technical data such as IP address, browser type, requested URL, timestamps, and security logs. This is used to deliver the site, keep it secure, and diagnose availability issues.
Purchases and license activation
If you buy Study Boxes Pro, an external checkout and licensing provider processes checkout, payment, tax, invoice, refund, fraud-prevention, and license information. Study Boxes may store license status, license key, activation instance ID, validation token, customer email, and validation timestamps so the app can recognise Pro access.
Support messages
If you contact support, we process the information you choose to send, such as your email address, macOS version, app version, screenshots, logs, and the content of your message. Do not send private study notes, calendar feed links, license keys, or sensitive files unless they are specifically needed for support.
Optional diagnostics
If you enable crash reports, Study Boxes uses Sentry to receive technical crash diagnostics such as app version, operating system, device model, stack traces, and error context. Study Boxes is designed not to include study box names, notes, tasks, URLs, file paths, license keys, calendar feed links, or emails in diagnostic reports.
4. Purposes and legal bases
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Provide the app's local study features | Local boxes, resources, tasks, notes, settings, sessions | Contract performance or your request to use the app |
| Provide optional focus and restore features | Local app, window, and desktop metadata needed for the feature | Contract performance and your explicit feature choice |
| Process purchases, taxes, invoices, refunds, and licenses | Checkout, payment, customer, and license records | Contract performance and legal obligations |
| Answer support requests | Contact details and message contents | Legitimate interests and contract support |
| Optional crash diagnostics | Technical crash and error data | Your consent, where required, or legitimate interests after opt-in |
| Website security and delivery | IP address, request data, security logs | Legitimate interests in running a secure website |
5. Permissions and local-only features
Accessibility permission is requested only when a feature needs it, such as moving windows, restoring window frames, hiding apps, quitting apps, enforcing Strict Focus, or placing app windows on desktop Spaces. Study Boxes does not use Accessibility permission to read your study notes or browser tabs. Browser windows may be opened or restored as app windows, but individual tabs are never inspected, managed, or restored.
6. Recipients and processors
Personal data may be processed by these service providers where relevant:
- Checkout and licensing provider for checkout, tax, payment, invoices, refunds, fraud prevention, and license management.
- Sentry for optional crash reporting and technical diagnostics.
- Website hosting and security providers for delivering and protecting this website.
- Email/support providers if you contact support.
These providers process data under their own terms and privacy notices where they act as independent controllers, or under processing arrangements where they act as processors.
7. International transfers
Some providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where GDPR requires it, transfers should rely on an adequacy decision, Standard Contractual Clauses, or another lawful transfer mechanism. We review provider terms and transfer mechanisms as part of operating the service.
8. Retention
- Local app data: kept on your Mac until you delete it or uninstall/remove the app data.
- License records: kept while your license is active and as needed for fraud prevention, support, accounting, and legal obligations.
- Support messages: kept only as long as needed to answer the request and maintain support records.
- Crash diagnostics: kept according to the diagnostic provider's retention settings and deleted when no longer needed.
- Website logs: kept by hosting/security providers for limited operational and security periods.
9. Your GDPR rights
If GDPR applies to you, you may have the right to request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection to processing. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier lawful processing. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise your rights, email support@studyboxes.app. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
10. Children
Study Boxes is a productivity app and is not directed at children. If you believe a child has sent personal data through support or checkout without appropriate permission, contact us so the issue can be reviewed.
11. Security
Study Boxes is designed to minimise data collection by keeping study data local. License and diagnostic data are limited to what is needed for the relevant feature. No system can be made perfectly secure, but we use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data.
12. Changes
This policy may be updated as Study Boxes, the website, or service providers change. The latest version will be posted on this page with an updated date.
